so my brother's got this 2014 Honda Odyssey EX for a while. He really wants to add that cool proximity keyless entry, you know, where the doors just unlock automatically when the key fob gets close.

He's been digging around online, and there are tons of units out there, but most of them seem to be more about immobilizers, push button start, or full alarm systems. They don't really spell out if they'll just handle the door unlocking part.

He's kinda scratching his head, wondering if he's even searching for the right thing.

He doesn't care about push button start or extra security stuff, just wants the doors to unlock without him having to hit a button.
He figures there's gotta be a pretty easy way to make this happen, like some kind of gadget that picks up his fob's signal nearby and then just sends the regular unlock code to the car. Any ideas for him?

I think what he's looking for is called "proximity unlock" or "hands-free keyless entry." I think many systems bundle this with remote start or full alarms but try to check Compustar. If I'm not mistaken, they offer a kit that specifically focuses on this feature without necessarily requiring a full remote start or alarm system to be installed.

Aftermarket proximity unlock kits are often gimmicks and security risks. Manufacturers omit them for safety reasons. Retrofitting is usually complicated, unreliable, and can compromise security...and sometimes it's better to stick with the original key fob

There are aftermarket proximity systems available, but they often come with unnecessary features and can be pretty unreliable. It's important to weigh the security risks against the convenience. Keep in mind that OEMs intentionally leave this feature out for safety reasons.

Thanks for the tip! My brother has a 2018 Honda Odyssey EX-L and was just starting to look into hands-free entry after juggling groceries and kids one too many times. If he goes with the Compustar kit, does it work with the factory key fob or does he need to carry a separate remote? And did you have it installed professionally or DIY?
