Man, I wanna make sure if this is shady or not, but my mom's 2018 Odyssey Elite got totaled and I feel like the insurance company is totally screwing us.

They just looked at a couple of pics of the body and called it a day. They'll send a tow truck to haul it away from our driveway soon. I bought this car as a Mother's Day gift. Do you think I can snag something from it, like some parts I can sneak off to make me feel better, or is it gonna be a bad thing later?

My mom's thinking about the same gen Ody or maybe a Pilot next

Damn, that sucks, especially since you gifted the car. Once its declared totaled, the insurance company owns it, so taking parts without asking could cause you some problems. If there's something small or sentimental you wanna keep, just check with the adjuster first to avoid any drama. I'd still go for the Ody by the way. Lol.

Once the insurance company declares it a total loss, technically the vehicle belongs to them even if it's still sitting in your driveway. If you start pulling parts off, it can come back to bite you (they may dock the payout or even refuse it if they notice).
But sometimes you can legitimately buy back the salvage from the insurance company if you want to keep parts or fix it yourself. If your mom is thinking of staying in the Honda family, you might even come out ahead—better payout in cash, then look for a clean Pilot or another Ody.
